NAME 01 of 16: YEHOVAH-ELOHIYM

The post The Names of God lays the foundation for 01 through 16. Please read it first, thanks.

To find out from scripture who Yehovah Elohiym is we have to first dissect Elohiym. Elohiym is a plural Hebrew word used throughout the Holy Bible and is translated God. My references to Elohiym will be from the book of Genesis. Elohiym is seen in Genesis 1:1 but let us go further along in scripture to a more personal visual.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” Genesis 1:26

What is interesting here is that Elohiym the plural God said: ‘let US’, ‘in OUR’ and ‘after OUR’ and then created man in the image of Elohiym (v.27). It is so clear in this scripture that Elohiym is more than one, that they existed together in the beginning and created and made everything (Genesis 2:3) including man in their image and after their (triune) likeness.

It is even more clear that Elohiym is plural when we examine the following scriptures: Genesis 1:1 says: “In the beginning God…” or Elohiym; Genesis 1:2 says: “And the Spirit of God…” that is, the Spirit of Elohiym (1 person of the 3); Genesis 1:3 says: “And God said…” that is, Elohiym uttered or the Word of Elohiym went forth (again 1 person of 3). ‘Elohiym said’ refers to a transfer of unified thought and intention to words. But which of the three spoke? Look at what the scripture says:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:1-3, 14

The Word was in the beginning, was with God and was God. In this scripture the word ‘God’ comes from the Greek THEOS, which refers to the Godhead or the Trinity. One person of the triune Elohiym/Theos spoke and brought everything into existence. This same divine person came to earth in the form of a man to die for our sins. He was called the "WORD". We have discussed the Spirit of Elohiym and the Word of Elohiym but what about the other person of this triune divinity, who is He and what did He do?

Yehovah is the proper name of this other divine person. The name originates from the letters of the Hebrew alphabet that correspond to our English YHWH. It is shortened in Psalm 68:4 to YAHH and translated to JAH in our English Bibles. When we combine the names Yehovah Elohiym it is literally ‘God the Existing One’. This is translated as ‘LORD God’ throughout the Holy Bible. We see Him for the first time in the Genesis 2 review of the creative acts (v.4) and personally forming or making man (v.7).

The scriptures clearly tell us that Yehovah Elohiym is God Himself, our maker, our father and our friend. He desires to be re-connected to all of us so that He may personally fellowship with us again.

Are you in fellowship with Him?

Be blessed.
